How ecobee helped one business

case study example

With 10 locations across Canada, Kitchen Stuff Plus wanted to know why one location was consuming more energy than the others. ecobee’s EMS Si thermostat advanced reports diagnosed behaviours that were increasing energy consumption.

In the first six months, the company saved approximately $6,500 in electricity costs and $800 in gas costs. Once they normalized the data for weather, they were able to save approximately $3,000.

Kitchen Stuff Plus applied their learnings to all locations and ran all stores according to standard operating procedures, resulting in fewer site visits and significant cost savings.

Who is Frankin Energy?

Franklin Energy is an industry expert in program administration and implementation for utility customers across Canada and the United States and currently delivers energy efficiency programs for a number of electric utilities in the Province of Ontario.

How much will it cost to participate in the Small Business Smart Thermostat Pilot Program?

Nothing more than a small amount of your time. There is NO COST to you for the thermostat or the installation process. We do ask that as a participant that you actively use the ecobee EMS Si thermostat and the associated applications. A representative from your business may need to be present and available during the installation process.

When does the Small Business Smart Thermostat Pilot start and end?

The program is set to launch November 14, 2016 and end December 31, 2017. Installs will begin on November 1st but will cease subject to thermostat availability.

How many customers will be enrolled for the FREE offer?

The ecobee smart thermostat pilot will see installations at 1,000 locations with up to 1,600 ecobee EMS Si Thermostats installed in total.

Who is eligible for the Small Business Smart Thermostat Pilot program?

The Small Business Smart Thermostat Pilot program is open to small business customers. As defined, small business customers, are non-residential customers that do not have a demand charge on their bill and are commonly referred to as General Service < 50 kilowatt customers. Participants must have a working central air conditioning system and Wi-Fi at their facility. Ideally, locations will have a footprint of less than 5,000 square feet with the small business being small retailers, restaurants and food services, owner-operated light manufacturers, and small offices.

Can I participate?

There are a few eligibility requirements of the program:

  • Does your facility have a Central Air Conditioning system?
  • Is the Central Air Conditioning unit accessible and in good working condition?
  • Is Wi-Fi accessible onsite, with password available to connect the thermostat to the network?
  • Have you been at the business premise for more than 12 months with the intention to stay another 12 months?
  • If you are a tenant, do you have approval from the owner to change the thermostat?
  • Are you willing to participate in feedback surveys about your experience up to 36 months after installation?
  • Are you willing to participate in follow up quality assurance and quality control visits at random (you will be notified in advance by your local electricity distribution company and/or its agent?)
  • Are you willing to have your energy data (gas and electricity) shared for the purposes of the pilot evaluation only?
  • If you answer yes to all of the above please fill out the pre-qualification web form here OR call our toll free number: +1 519 804 0571

What are the terms and conditions of the program?

The program terms and conditions can be found here.

How will my data be used?

Your data will be supplied by your local electricity and gas distributor (where applicable) and transferred to a third party for the evaluation process of the pilot. The data will be handled using standard security protocols and will not be shared with any other third party without your consent.

I already have an ecobee thermostat installed; can I still participate in the pilot program?

Unfortunately, because of already having an ecobee thermostat, your facility is not eligible to participate in the pilot program.

Do I qualify if I have multiple locations?

Multi-site customers, with more than one location may be eligible to participate in the program. Eligibility will be dependent on the Small Business Smart Thermostat Pilot program eligibility criteria as well as the location of the other sites, based on the number of air conditioning units, and the number of thermostats.

How is this Small Business Smart Thermostat Pilot program different from peaksaver and peaksaver PLUS programs?

Under the peaksaver® and peaksaver PLUS® programs deployed thermostats that were capable of one-way communication only, in that they could receive a signal or communication but were unable to return a signal or communication. In addition, the focus of that program was Demand Response, with a goal of reducing peak demand. The Small Business Smart Thermostat pilot program will install true two-way communicating thermostats with a focus on reducing energy consumption and driving energy savings.

Why are you running this pilot program?

Energy +, Kitchener-Wilmot Hydro, Waterloo North Hydro and Union Gas Limited want to help small business customers reduce their energy costs through new and innovative programs. The Small Business Smart Thermostat Pilot program will allow us to calculate the energy savings associated with the installation of a Wi-Fi enabled thermostat for both your electricity and natural gas consumption. In addition, we will be able to determine the savings differential between single and multi-site locations as well as determine customer satisfaction with the program.

What is in it for me?

There are several benefits to participating in this program:

  • Opportunity to reduce your energy bills
  • Access to simple reports and set alerts via web portal and mobile applications
  • Convenient control over your facilities heating and cooling system via web portal and mobile applications
  • Ability to manage and control multiple facilities from one location, from one application
  • Ability to limit access for adjustments by unauthorized users
  • Opportunity to connect two external sensors for monitoring and alerting of other critical, non-air condition facility or operational equipment i.e. cooler temperature sensor
  • FREE Wi-Fi Thermostat and Installation!

The Thermostat

Why should I replace my current thermostat with ecobee EMS Si?

ecobee’s EMS Si is perfect for commercial applications where a simple thermostat is not adequate and a full-scale building automation system would be costly and overly complex. The ecobee EMS Si is easy-to-use, Wi-Fi enabled for remote web and mobile access, and features adaptive algorithms to maximize energy savings.

What are some of these great features?

The ecobee EMS Si provides many advanced features, including:

  • Full seven-day occupancy programming,
  • Internet weather, demand response,
  • 365-day event scheduling,
  • Smart recovery from set-back or set-forward using weather and facility performance,
  • High- and low-temperature alerts by email, service reminders,
  • Ability to have two external sensors connected for monitoring and reporting, and
  • Programming through any web browser using the EMS web portal or ecobee mobile app.

Will the ecobee EMS Si support my current heating and cooling equipment?

The ecobee EMS Si supports a wide variety of equipment, including conventional forced air systems, heat pumps, boilers, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, ventilators fresh air dampers, economizer control, as well as automation and Load Control Devices (LCDs). The ecobee EMS Si supports up to 2 dry contact inputs or 10K resistive sensors for additional building automation features. These sensors can be used for zone temperature averaging or for monitoring of walk-in freezers or coolers as examples.

Relays and dry contact inputs can be used to perform automation that results in energy savings. For example, a motion detector can be added to the ecobee EMS Si so that the thermostat is automatically switched from occupied to unoccupied depending on space occupancy. For applications with loading doors, the ecobee EMS Si can be programmed to automatically shut down the air conditioning if a loading door is left open for a specified period.

For a complete list of sensors tested with remote sensor module visit ecobee’s remote sensor web page.

How does the web portal and mobile app work?

ecobee makes it easy to log in and see what is going on now, what happened in the past and what your schedule looks like for the future. Remote management and online diagnostics are provided free through the commercial web portal and mobile application. The ecobee EMS Si mobile app is available for iOS and Android OS and gives users complete control over their system including:

  • Seeing what’s happening at their buildings from anywhere they have web or mobile access
  • Managing an unlimited number of thermostats, thermostat zones and locations
  • Viewing reports on their heating and cooling system performance
  • Modifying their occupancy schedule
  • Adding users and changing user permissions
  • Setting up alerts and service reminders
  • Setting a 365-day schedule
  • Changing user and thermostat preferences

How do you ensure functionality?

Our Energy Specialists will test existing equipment to ensure it is functioning before removing your existing thermostat. After the ecobee EMS Si is installed, the same Energy Specialists will run the system through a complete heating and cooling cycle to ensure that the device responds properly. If the ambient temperature is less than 10° C, the cooling cycle will not be run to avoid damage to the system.

Is my privacy affected from sharing Wi-Fi network information?

To ensure your privacy is maintained, you will be provided with a form in advance that asks for a schedule of “occupied” and “unoccupied” temperature and time settings. Before configuring the installed device to the temperature and time settings selected by the customer, a Wi-Fi password is required. Rather than collecting your Wi-Fi password, the Energy Specialist will ask you to enter your own Wi-Fi password.
